I'm not happy with the things that came on the cinemas in 2009, so it's going to be very hard for me to decide which movies are going to be in my annual Top 10 Favorite Movies list at the end of the year. Even the movies that I was excited about at the beginning of the year, such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Public Enemies, didn't turn out to be as good as I thought they would be. Worse yet, the films that I'm absolutely dying to see aren't going to play in cinemas here. So, really, 2009 has not really been a fantastic year for the movie buff in me.

Thankfully, there was The Boat that Rocked. Richard Curtis' latest movie - which didn't play here officially, mind you - is wonderfully entertaining with a brilliant all-star Brit cast. I'm not Curtis' biggest fan after Love, Actually, but I can't help but get up on my feet and give him a huge applause after I finished watching this one on DVD. I like that this movie isn't a rom-com, which I consider a deviation from Curtis' other movies, and I think it's nice to see him try something new.

As you might have heard, this movie's about a fictitious pirate radio that broadcast its programs from an anchored ship in the middle of the North Sea. It has, according to the DVD cover, eight DJs (or was it seven?), one ship and zero morals. The government (represented by the esteemed Kenneth Branagh who plays a loose parody of former Postmaster General Tony Benn and the utterly scrumptious Jack Davenport as Branagh's aide, named Twatt) aimed to shut them down through various means. Besides the radio's boss, DJs and ship's crew, there was Young Carl (Tom Sturridge), who was there to live a straight and narrow life after something happened at school. Then all sorts of debauchery happened (Nick Frost's beefy character gets to shag not only Gemma Arterton, but also Talulah Riley, and therefore breaking Tom's heart!) and the government sunk the ship and Philip Seymour Hoffman almost drowned but ROCK N' ROLL LIVES ON!

Anyway, despite that crappy summary I just wrote, I really, really liked what I saw in that movie. Never mind the music, the radio, or the history (especially the history -- because I don't think it's historically accurate); it was basically a movie about what happens when a bunch of (mostly) straight idealistic guys are left out on sea together for years and bond through music and broadcasting. There's plenty of what-the-fuckery, nonsensical lines, and music that I don't know half the name of. And it's SO. MUCH. FUN. I think the cast blend well with each other. Half of the cast are well-known names while the other half are... well, not so well-known. But they blend well together. Even Branagh and Davenport, both of whom never had any real interaction with the guys on the both, seemed to fit in right there with them. Just... fun.

(Plus, Tom Sturridge is really hot. Seriously? Why is he not making fangirls scream like his best friend does? There's something wrong with the world.)

So, my point is, I loved The Boat that Rocked and I'm glad I spent more than 2 hours of my evening yesterday watching this. At least, at the end of the year, when I have to make my Favorites Lists, I know what to put in the Top 10. This movie is going to be in it.

I have seen quite a bit about ratings on the internet lately, but how exactly should things be rated? More than one person has asked me for a PG-13 rating tag but I won't make one because I do not see a difference between that and PG. Kids & teens on Livejournal aren't going to be asking their parents for permission for anything anyway. Rating is subjective because something one person finds racy and really mature might seem really tame and vanilla to another.

So, here's a guide for rating in this community. I can't speak for others or what you choose to rate things in your own journal or community and I'm not going to come after you if you don't rate things as I have outlined here. If you are concerned about your work being read by younger readers where the content my not be suitable, you can adjust the adult content rating. This is largely the way I rate my own work but I think it's a solid base to go by. If anyone has anything else to suggest, please let me know.

Oh dear, I've done it now. I've actually written an Arashi fanfiction. And I started off so far down the MPAA rating system. *dies* Ah well, good times. Hope everyone enjoys. Constructive criticism is appreciated. This was unbetaed, so feel free to point out any glaring grammatical errors. Thanks!

Edit: Ugh, that took me so long to figure out how to make a URL link with different text. And it was so simple! Trial and error is frustrating sometimes.

Epic apologies for slacking on my mod duties. Life hasn't let me be as leisurely as I'd like it to and wow the year is almost over.

I poked around one of the anon memes recently posted and someone mentioned this community and how there hasn't been challenges in a while... so I'm posting one! I'm going to find an internet alarm thing to remind me to do them next year. And with that, our theme:

December Challenge: New Year's Resolutions
Deadline: December 31st

You don't have to do the typical solar calendar new year, it could be the school year, the lunar year, the Celtic new year, whatever comes to your mind. Making resolutions, trying to keep them, and succeeding, or not. Up to you.

I'm posting this early because I know how crazy the holiday season can be. You can have 2 extra weeks to think about it. To those of you doing [info]je_holiday, good luck!

If anyone has any suggestions for challenges, please leave a comment. :) I'm going back to the first brainstorming post and pulling up one of those suggestions for January. I already know which one.
